Recently I was at an artist talk, and the panel mentioned the influence Anni Albers had on textiles and its perception by the art world. The name sounded vaguely familiar, ringing a few bells in the back of my head. Later in the evening, I happened to run into my old tutor from the RSN. I naively asked “who is Anni Albers?” and based on her reaction, I realized I had some serious studying to do.
A few weeks later, I was taking in the incredible contemporary textile sculptures at the Sarah Myerscough Gallery show Thread. Once again, the name Anni Albers appears!
So here I am, rectifying my embarrassing lack of knowledge on one of the most influential figures in textile art.
